There is something about a “makeover” movie that feels very empowering. While I do think beauty comes from within, I think a little improvement on the outside can help bring out or accentuate more of what is on the inside. There have been countless movies made where the man or woman is shown slovenly and disheveled in the beginning, face an obstacle, get a makeover, and conquer the world as the “new” him or her. These movies are so much fun to watch for this very reason.
In the Princess Diaries, Anne Hathaway is an unkempt teen who is transformed into a stunning “prin-cess.” If you like this movie, you might enjoy the classic film, Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn. I adore this movie, and was actually so inspired by it that I wrote a make-believe story about the main character when I was in second grade. Initially, Audrey Hepburn, as Sabrina, is just a chauffeur’s daughter, but becomes an adored, cultured woman chased by the wealthy men. As a viewer, I root for the underdogs, and want these beautiful women to succeed — frumpy or not. It’s fun to see an outstanding transformation, as it makes you believe anything is possible and that even you, yes you, can conquer the world.
